Jacksons the Bakers

From humble beginnings baking war-rationed bread in 1944, Jacksons the Bakers, a family run business based in Chesterfield, now produce a wide range of craft bread, and award winning confectionery and savoury products.

Supplying over 200 independent wholesalers in the area and public sector outlets, around 5,000 confectionery products and a similar number of savoury products are produced every day from their brand new purpose built factory.

When MD, Trevor Jackson met with ULMA, plans for the new factory were still a little way off, but it was clear that there would be advantages in moving from L-sealing as the primary method of packing to cope with the increased volumes predicted, creating greater efficiencies by adopting flow wrapping for certain lines and in so doing enhance the appearance of finished packs.

One of the major issues was the sheer number of products involved and the perceived need for flexibility to change pack runs quickly and easily during shifts. On top of which there were potentially some risks associated with changing processes at the same time as migrating operations to the new factory.

Trevor spent some time evaluating what ULMA had proposed and compared it with second hand options and competitive offerings. Ultimately the decision was taken to install a fully electronic ULMA Florida flow wrapper, our entry level horizontal form fill and seal machine.

Jacksons were impressed with the quality and reliability of the machine, which is easy to operate and maintain. On top of this it’s touch screen operation with multi product memory means that changeovers can be made quickly and simply at the press of a button. The machine also benefits from ‘no product - no bag’ and ‘misplaced product detection’ and works with clear and printed film.

Above all ULMA worked closely with Jacksons throughout the process to ensure that the transition to the new operation went smoothly with full operator training available as appropriate.
